Testing the Null of Stationarity in the Presence of Structural Breaks for Multiple Time Series

چکیده
This paper introduces various consistent tests for the null hypothesis of stationarity with possibly unknown multiple structural break points against the alternative of nonstationarity that can be applied to multiple as well as univariate time series. These tests can be applied to either partial or pure structural breaks. It is shown that tests for stationarity become divergent when structural breaks are ignored. We show that we can allow a variety of structural breaks for which limiting distributions are derived and tabulated. Finite sample properties are studied by simulation. We also consider multivariate testing strategy and univariate tests and find that multivariate tests are often more powerful than univariate tests. JEL Code: C32

Which OIC countries are catching up? Time Series Evidences with Multiple Structural Breaks
Abstract In this paper, income per capita convergence hypothesis is tested in selected OIC countries. For this purpose, we use the time series model and univariate KPSS stationary test with multiple structural breaks (Carrion-i-Silvestre et al. (2005)) over the period 1950-2008. The results show that most OIC countries could not catch up toward USA. Although because of some positive term of tra...
متن کاملA New Nonlinear Specification of Structural Breaks for Money Demand in Iran
In a structural time series regression model, binary variables have been used to quantify qualitative or categorical quantitative events such as politic and economic structural breaks, regions, age groups and etc. The use of the binary dummy variables is not reasonable because the effect of an event decreases (increases) gradually over time not at once. The simple and basic idea in this paper i...
متن کاملPurchasing Power Parity and the Real Rand-dollar Exchange Rate
his paper tests for evidence in support of the purchasing power parity (PPP) in the bilateral real exchange rate series of the South African rand against the US dollar. The importance of considering structural breaks in the PPP test is illustrated. Using standard unit root tests without considering structural breaks, the study is unable to reject the null hypothesis of a unit root in the exchan...
متن کاملStationarity Test for Aggregate Outputs in the Presence of Structural Breaks
This study tests for the stationarity of aggregate output (GDP at factor cost) and its three major components, namely GDP agriculture, GDP industry and GDP services in the presence of structural breaks during 1950-51 to 2011-12. Results indicate that (i) the GDP has three break points; (ii) GDP agriculture contains one while the GDP industry and GDP services contain four breaks each; and (iii) ...
متن کاملOver-Rejections By Weighted Symmetric Unit Root Tests In The Presence Of Multiple Structural Breaks
For the case of the presence of onetime structural change in the sample, Leybourne and Newbold (2000) and Cook (2004) investigated the behavior of the WS tests. Leybourne and Newbold concluded that the weighted symmetric version of the DF t-type test will properly reject the unit root null hypothesis at some specified significance level when the true data-generating process is an I (1) process....
